One of the most commonly asked questions I get is what DMO (daily method of operations) someone should be doing. I've put lists together so many times only to have them be obsolete a few months later, so unfortunately I can't tell you what you need to do daily. What I can do is provide a roadmap for you to figure out your own DMOs. At the bottom of this blog are a list of specific trainings you'll want to tune into if you come across any task on the DMO list that you don't fully understand or would like to fine tooth.

Step 1: Social Media Marketing VS Email Marketing

As far as online business building goes, your business is likely coming from social media interactions, your email list, or various ads you're running. Now, I don't run ads. I get all of my new customers for free, and that's what I teach. No shame if you want to run ads, but I'm not qualified to teach on the because I don't do it. What we're going to look at today is social media and your email list.

They both make money, so there's not a right or wrong way to build. Let's go through a few pros and cons of each.

Social Media

Cons

Easily leads to burn out

Takes a lot of time

Have to have an established brand (download free branding tutorial here)

OR spend a lot of time cold messaging

One on one closing

Pros

Can lead to sponsorships and influencer marketing

It's fun to build a community

Unlimited Leads

Email List

Cons

Small fee for your email service

Learning curve (tech stuff)

Takes a little bit to build your list

Pros

Quickly pitch or follow up with everyone on your list at once

No brand needed

No cold messaging

Sales on autopilot

Can lead to big brand deals

They both make money

There's no wrong or right way to build an online business, it's about your preferences. What do you enjoy doing? Do you mind messaging strangers trying to pitch them your product? If not, social media is a good fit. Do you enjoy putting your creative hat on? Email marketing would be awesome for you! What do YOU want to do?

The one thing I will say is that if you're brand new and have little to no marketing experience, I'd start with social media. Creating an email list and consistently producing lead magnets can be overwhelming for even the most seasoned social marketers.

Social media is much more simple. It allows the every day, ordinary mom to make money right away. It takes more time because it's all a numbers game, there's not a lot of skill involved outside of the branding aspect, so it's great for beginners who have a thick skin. I built my business this way for almost 5 years.

Email marketing on the other hand frees up a lot more time for you to enjoy life, but it requires you to learn a new skillset and do some work for free before you start seeing the sales roll in. It also allows you to set yourself apart from every other Deborah out there selling in the same niche you are.

We're going to take a look at DMOs for both options, so you can decide which one fits your budget, personality, and schedule best. You'll definitely want to make sure you watch the video that goes along with this one for all of the tutorials. These aren't set in stone lists, they're simply things I've done and my clients have done that have worked. You can choose a few of them or all of them, up to you. If you're transitioning from social media to email, you may want to include some of both into your DMO. At the end I'm going to show you what both social media and email lists have in common,

Daily Method of Operations for each platform

This is the last "task list" you'll ever need for your online business. Below I've included tasks to build your business on Facebook, Instagram, and via an email list.

Social Media is the easiest way, because it's literally just checking things off a list each day, but email marketing is best for long term growth.

Hardest part of social media is building a brand, so you don’t get lost in the crowd of everyone else selling homeschool products, weight loss products, gut healing products, childrens books, whatever you’re selling. You have to set yourself apart from the crowd in order to make any real money on social media. If you're not sure how to brand, or think you are branded well but want to double check, download this free branding worksheet and watch this social media audit we recently did.

-Interact groups

-Add from groups

-Delete friend requests that are a week or more old

Instagram

Weekly:

-Content Prep

(On Facebook you can get away with not having as strong of a brand as instagram. Facebook you can also gain followers by being a little bit more gimmicky, doing giveaways, that kind of thing. Instagram you have to have a very solid brand and be consistently adding value, and even then it takes time unless you get really lucky with a reel going viral. Instagram is a much better platform for selling, but you'll have to put in the work. Spammy Sammy makes very little money on FB but makes even less on instagram)

-Message

-Connect with new followers
-Interact in your niche

Email

Email marketing is a whole different beast from social media marketing. The idea here is getting your leads off of social media and onto your email list. We don't own social media, and no one wants to be at the mercy of Zuck. To get leads off of social, you need to have two things: a strong brand and a killer freebie.

I build my email list from two different sources: virtual summits/conferences and social media.

I do email my list as summit opportunities come up, so if you’d like to be notified on those, add yourself to the email list by following directions outlined in the corresponding video. When opportunities come up you’ll receive an email with the requirements to participate in that specific summit or conference.

Until you have a strong social media presence or a strong blog, you’ll probably be turned down for the larger summits, but it’s good to apply to them anyway while you’re working on your brand. The smaller summits that accept pretty much anyone who applies are also a great way to get your foot into the door of the summit world. Remember, we all started at the beginning.

Today we're going to focus on growing our email list through social media. Email marketing is by far the smartest way to work your online business whether you’re in network marketing or you’re running a traditional Etsy shop or something like that where you’re selling your own products. Branding is a key part of this, so if you’re not 100% solidified on your target audience and how to speak their language, I would enroll in the BossMom Branding Bootcamp to maximize your efforts with your email list.

Blog or Video Content

When growing your email list through social media, the whole point is to get them OFF of social media, so you'll need to be creating content that directs them OFF of social in order to download something of value. To get the full impact of this training, you'll 100% want to make sure you're watching the corresponding video linked above.

Weekly Content

Ideally, you'll create a blog AND a corresponding video each week along with supporting social media posts to throw up in the days after the blog is posted. Realistically though, not everyone is at the point to jump in with both feet and that's ok! Decide how much/what kind of content you want to create and proceed accordingly. The most important thing is that you show up consistently to your audience, so they know what to expect. Below is my content schedule.

The Daily Task List

Again, I can’t tell you exactly what you need to do daily, but you can use my list to create your own DMO. Be sure to write it down and track it.

With social media marketing it's easy to mark off tasks, email marketing its a little tougher because the same task today may take twice as long next week depending on the content it contains, so I'd suggest tracking your time instead of tracking the completed tasks.

Clock in and out as if you were reporting to a boss because if you want your business to pay you like a business, you have to show up like you’re reporting to a boss everyday. Clock in and out, stay focused and productive, and set a certain amount of hours you’re going to commit to working each week then show up for yourself and for your family. Included in the FREE email marketing guidebook I have for you guys is a clock in/out sheet that you can use for this.

Above is the checklist I work off of, and the video explains each item in more detail. Once you have your checklist, you can then break it down into a daily task list like I did below.

The one thing that's not included in the list above is creating an automated welcome email. I cover that entirely in the video because it's easier to show you than tell you what it looks like. A good welcome email will convert your cold contacts quicker than anything else you can deliver. It's a one time task, but it is a necessary one.
