We’re a year round homeschool family, so what “normal” homeschooling looks like for us is drastically different depending what season you find us in. Most homeschool families actually look different from season to season and that’s perfectly fine!

If you’ve watched our videos before, welcome back! We appreciate you! If you’re new here welcome! I’m Tonya Johnson and I’m the Holiday Homeschooler where we believe every season is a holiday season. We love celebrating life and showing you how you can have a fun and exciting homeschool while keeping a biblical worldview.

Today we’re going to be talking all things “Summer” Homeschooling. What does our normal day to day look like (or at least what we plan for them to look like) and how we cover everything “required” plus all of the fun extras while consistently taking week long breaks. Yes it is possible, let me show you. Here’s my 10 yr old daughter’s normal school routine through the summer. We average 3 days per week. During the year, we’ll have weeks that have 4 and weeks that have 2, but it averages out to 3 per week. Summer school for us is May through end of September because that’s when our pool is open. October - November is our fall schedule, December we do Christmas school all month long, and then Jan - April is our winter school schedule even though its not really that cold.

Morning Routine

I usually wake up a couple hours before she does anyway, but especially during the summer months where we’re spending a lot of time at the pool. I know that when we're done swimming, I have 0 desire to come home and clean or fix dinner, or any of that. So I get up, clean my house, pack our lunches, pack school/the wagon (make sure you watch the corresponding video that goes along with this), prep dinner, basically reset my life so I have very little to do when we come back in from the pool.

When she wakes up, which I usually get her up between 6/630 during the summer, she does her journaling and her devotions. At about 815 I leave for the gym. During the non-pool months, Glori comes with me and does a workout on her own. We just started doing this about a month ago when we found a child friendly gym. During the summer months; however, I’ve decided I’m not going to have her come (unless she just wants to come) because she’s going to get plenty of moving her body at the pool. So from about 7-10 Glori is packing her lunch for the pool, cleaning her three areas which are her bedroom, bathroom, and the classroom, getting her stuff ready for the pool, eating breakfast, and then doing her independent subjects. Basically she’ll have a list of things to work through as I'm doing my morning routine and then while I’m at the gym.

1030-1130

At 1030 we head to the pool because that’s when it opens here. From 1030-1130 Im doing my Jesus journaling and she’s playing in the pool.

1130-230

We do school while taking plenty of swim breaks to stay cool. Anything we can do in the pool we do, the rest is done in the shade at the picnic tables. (See the video for more details on this)

230-330

We have friends over for swimming

330-430

We typically head home to shower and change into comfy clothes. Now, I usually tutor in the evenings, so my comfy clothes are actual clothes, but Glori's are 100% going to be pjs.

430-5

I put dinner together and pack my husband’s lunch. Remember I prepped everything that morning, so all I have to do now is throw a pan in the oven or turn the potatoes on to start boiling, etc. Very easy to throw everything together at this point.

5-8

Depends on the day, usually it’s me tutoring or working, and then if I have extra time we’ll play games or do school if we have like a science experiment or hands on project to do.

WEDNESDAYS

Wednesdays are the exception because we usually don’t go to the pool on Wednesdays. We have youth group Wednesday evenings, and I don’t like rushing home to shower and do my hair and such, plus I tutor mid-day on Wednesdays because I have a couple very young students that it doesn’t make sense to have them come in the evenings, so we just stay home on Wednesdays. This is the day I purposely schedule hands on projects, experiments, art days, etc. Things I don’t want to try to do at the pool.

In addition, we have summer camp, vbs, and youth conference this summer that we’ve scheduled our breaks around, but are also very educational weeks, so we’re looking forward to all three of those.

That’s what our summer school schedule looks like. We’re pretty excited to get back to our pool schooling. What does your summer schedule look like? I’d love to hear down in the comment section or over on my social media page. See y’all next week!
