In numbers 9, we see the Hebrew children making a HUGE move across country, all while following God’s leading. This simple chapter really got me thinking. It’s easy, and wise to ask for God’s guidance while making a big life decision, but what about the small, every day decisions.
Wouldn’t it be just as wise to ask for God’s guidance in where we are right now? Most of you reading this are homeschool moms, and a lot of you are building a social media platform in order to contribute financially to your household. That sums up 90% of my audience, and I love it! I teach ordinary, busy homeschool moms how to get paid doing what they love doing, teaching their kiddos. What that means? YOU, the person reading this right now, are in the trenches of what will probably be the busiest season of your life. We just finished up our St Patrick’s Homeschool Day, and it was fun, but it was also a lot of work! And that’s just one day out of 365.
The big life decisions are few and far between, but the chaos of everyday life juggling kids and housework and meals and content creation and the ever growing to do list is upon you. I should say us actually because I’m right there in the trenches with you haha. Are we asking for God’s guidance in the every day? Or are we trusting in our own routine, our own curriculum, and our own self discipline? I’ve definitely been guilty of the latter. I gave myself this challenge, and I now pass it on to each of you. Pull out a notebook and a pen, or even better, grab your journal. Write down each hat that you currently wear, for me:
- Wife
- Homeschool mom
- Business owner
- Social media influencer
- Blogger
- Mom
- Teacher
- Ministry worker
- Self (don’t forget this one)
- Friend
- Sister
- Daughter
And I’m sure there are a few I’m missing. Now spend a few minutes asking God how He would want you to use your present circumstances, your present influence, your present physical space, etc. for His glory.
I love teaching through stories, so grab your favorite coffee and get cozy… 7 years ago we were living in a basement apartment. It truly was an answer to prayer, and our landlords were amazing! What was supposed to be a 6 month stay turned into 5 years. Long story short, I had come to the conclusion that if I wanted a nicer living place, I first had to take care of what I had. At times it was discouraging because clean as i might, the musty smell never completely went away, we were constantly cleaning areas of mold from the floods we had, and the space was TINY, but we were grateful and continued treating it with respect. What I was looking forward to most was the day we would buy our dream home. The home where we could host large gatherings and really love on the people around us. Our current living space was barely big enough for the 3 of us, let alone hosting anything.
About 3 years after starting my social marketing job, God landed a dream STARTER home in our lap. Key word starter… Was it big enough to hold big team retreats and host large family holidays? Nope But it was PERFECT for our family, and quite honestly too good to pass up. As we signed on the dotted line, a still small voice reminded me that I didn’t need to wait for the perfect home to love on people. I needed to use our present space for His glory. So, in the next 5-10 years, our plan is to build our dream home, and while we’ll absolutely be praying for God’s guidance when the time comes, we first are praying for guidance on how to use our current home for His glory. We love hosting a few people at a time and using our home as a way to love on other people. Most recently, we opened our home on a Sunday night after church for a family to come over and watch the super bowl. It was hilarious because we had just gotten home from a two week vacation, the house was a mess and our luggage was still in the living room, and get this, when the pizza came, I realized we didn’t have any paper plates (there are three of us, so we don’t have a ton of real dishes… we don’t need them haha) but we ALWAYS have paper plates, except that night. We had 6 kids in our living room ranging from age 6-17 and 4 adults, and we were literally using pizza boxes as our dinnerware. You know what? We had a blast, and it’s a night that none of us will ever forget.
We laughed and had a great time (except for the fans of the losing team of course) and no one cared that our house wasn’t Pinterest perfect or that they were drinking coke from paper cups. In our current home, with our covered couches and mismatched flooring, God has called us to be hospitable, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. Homeschool mama, God is calling you to do something extraordinary with your seemingly ordinary life. He is calling you to raise those babies for Jesus and love your husband unconditionally. That may not seem like a lot, but ask your kids and your husband in 20 years how your prayer for daily guidance shaped their worldview. You are called to one of the hardest jobs on the planet, seek His face daily.
To the woman building her presence online to help pay for her kids’ curriculum and field trips, I’m right there with you!! But is money the only goal? Or are you using your ever growing platform for God? I’ve had people get annoyed at me because I do so many Bible study videos. I’ve been unfollowed and unfriended because I post so much about how to help your kids build a relationship with God vs just following a strict set of rules. I just don’t care. My end goal with my platform is to glorify God above all else. Is the extra money nice? Absolutely! If I lose customers because I’m too Jesus focused am I going to stop talking about God? Nope. Without him I wouldn’t have any influence, so I’m choosing to give that influence back to him 100%. I could go on and on, there are many other hats I wear, and I could explain how God gets glory from each one, but y’all get the point. We get so focused on asking God for guidance for the big decision and what’s to come in the future that we forget to ask him to guide our steps today and lead us through the mundane tasks happening in our homes in this moment. Let’s make it a habit to seek His face every morning and ask Him to guide our steps through the chaos that is under our roofs TODAY.
Happy Friday friends.
