Homeschool Fun Days: King Phillip’s War

Whether you're teaching at a homeschool co-op, or just trying to bring subjects to life for your own reluctant learners, mini, fun based learning units are a must.

I'm currently teaching through different time periods in history for our middle school co-op, so I'm creating mini (60-90 min long) lesson plans that incorporate all five sense. For the King Phillip's War lesson plan we have:

If you're not familiar with Seat Work, it's simply work that can be done independently either during the first few min of class, or before class starts while kids are arriving. Some teachers use busy work for this. Personally, I prefer to create seat work that goes along with that day's lesson. 

For this lesson, the seat work was to simply cut out all of the timeline pieces, so when it came time to complete our craft, we weren't wasting time cutting things out. 

Remember to keep the lesson to 10-15 min with lots of kid interactions. 

The craft for this lesson was one that really reinforced what we've been learning and ties all three lessons from the Early Explorers Thanksgiving section together quite nicely: Jamestown, The Mayflower, and King Phillips War. Each kid got an 11x17 piece of poster board that they got to turn into a timeline of everything that happened from the time John Smith and his crew set out for America all the way through the end of the war. Very detailed directions as well as a page of exactly what the completed timeline would look like were essential to making this work with a slightly larger class like this. 

Vocabulary Matching is the game for this lesson and it's played exactly like the traditional matching game. If you have a large group of kids, pair them off into 2-4 players. Start with all the cards facedown and take turns flipping two over at a time. If you get a word with the matching definition you win that pair and keep going until you miss. Most pairs when all the cards are gone wins. 

Because the colonists ate a lot of dried fruit and nuts during the King Phillip's War, I grabbed a bag of trail mix for a super easy snack to go with this lesson.
